About the Scholarship

PureCouponCodes is a free coupon and deal platform that helps millions of Americans save money every day. We believe the habits that make someone a smart shopper — comparing prices, avoiding impulse buys, understanding value — are the same habits that lead to long-term financial health.

The PureCouponCodes Smart Shopper Scholarship is our way of investing in students who think critically about personal finance, consumer behavior, and the real cost of everyday decisions. We award $2,000 once per year to one deserving student at any level of accredited US education — high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate.

🌱

This scholarship is funded entirely by the affiliate commissions we earn when users save money through our platform. The more you save, the more we can give back. It is a direct extension of our mission.

Eligibility Requirements

We keep eligibility broad so that as many students as possible can apply. To be considered, you must meet all of the following criteria:

You are currently enrolled, or have been accepted to enroll, in an accredited US high school, community college, undergraduate university, or graduate program for the upcoming academic year.

You maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). We value character and perspective over perfect grades — the GPA threshold simply ensures academic standing.

You are a US citizen, permanent resident, or DACA recipient currently residing in the United States.

You submit a complete application by the annual deadline of April 30 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

Your essay is entirely your own original work, written in English, and has not been submitted to any other scholarship program simultaneously.

The following are not eligible to apply:

Employees, contractors, or immediate family members of PureCouponCodes LLC.

Previous winners of the PureCouponCodes Smart Shopper Scholarship.

Students enrolled in online programs that are not regionally or nationally accredited by a US Department of Education-recognized body.

Essay Prompts

Choose one of the following essay prompts. Your essay should be between 500 and 700 words. There is no right or wrong answer — we are looking for authenticity, critical thinking, and a clear personal voice.

Prompt 1 — Personal Experience

"Describe a specific moment when a financial decision — your own or someone else's — changed how you think about money, spending, or value."

This can be a positive or negative experience. Focus on what you learned and how it shaped your current relationship with money and purchasing decisions.

Prompt 2 — Critical Analysis

"The average American household spends over $1,000 per year on impulse purchases. What do you think drives this behavior, and what practical strategies can help people spend more intentionally?"

Draw on research, personal observation, or your own experience. We value specific, actionable ideas over general statements.

Prompt 3 — Future Vision

"How do you plan to apply financial literacy skills — including smart shopping habits — to your career, education, or community after graduation?"

Be specific about your field of study or career goals. Show us the connection between everyday financial decisions and the bigger picture of your life.

⚠️

AI-Generated Content Policy: Essays must be written entirely by the applicant. Use of AI writing tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) to generate or substantially rewrite your essay will result in immediate disqualification. We use both automated detection and manual review. Your authentic voice is what we want to read.

Judging Criteria

Applications are reviewed by a panel of three judges from the PureCouponCodes editorial team. Each essay is scored on the following criteria:

✍️

35%

Originality & Voice

A distinct, authentic perspective. We want to hear your story, not a generic essay about budgeting.

🧠

30%

Critical Thinking

Depth of analysis, quality of reasoning, and the ability to support claims with evidence or experience.

💡

20%

Relevance & Insight

How well the essay addresses the chosen prompt and demonstrates genuine understanding of financial decision-making.

📝

15%

Writing Quality

Clarity, structure, grammar, and adherence to the 500–700 word limit. Strong writing elevates strong ideas.

Tie-Breaking: In the event of tied scores, the panel will give preference to the applicant demonstrating greater financial need, as indicated in the application email. Financial need is not a primary criterion, but it may be the deciding factor between equally strong essays.

Past Winners

We are proud to have supported students from across the country. Here are highlights from previous winners:

SM

Sofia M. — 2024 Winner

Junior · Business Administration · University of Texas at Austin

"Growing up in a household where my mom clipped paper coupons every Sunday morning taught me that saving money is not about being cheap — it is about being intentional. Every dollar redirected is a dollar that works for you."

JT

James T. — 2023 Winner

Senior · Public Policy · George Mason University

"The most powerful consumer tool is not a coupon app — it is the pause between wanting something and buying it. That pause is a skill, and like any skill, it can be taught and practiced."

AL

Aisha L. — 2022 Winner

Sophomore · Nursing · Ohio State University

"Working two part-time jobs while in school meant every grocery run was a math problem. That experience did not just teach me to save money — it taught me to see money as time converted into currency, and to spend it accordingly."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I am a high school senior?

Yes. High school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited college or university for the upcoming academic year are eligible to apply. Please include your acceptance letter or enrollment confirmation in your application email.

Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

We require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). We understand that GPA does not fully represent a student's potential or circumstances, so we intentionally set this threshold low — it is a baseline, not a competitive factor. The essay is what matters most.

 Can international students apply?

At this time, the scholarship is open to US citizens, permanent residents, and DACA recipients residing in the United States. International students studying in the US on a visa are not eligible for this particular award.

How is the $2,000 award paid out?

The award is sent as a check made payable to your accredited educational institution and applied directly to your student account to cover tuition, fees, or other qualified educational expenses. We do not send funds directly to individual applicants.

Can I apply in multiple years?

Yes — you may apply each year you are eligible, as long as you were not a previous winner of this scholarship. Previous winners are not eligible to receive the award a second time.

Do I need to be studying finance or business to apply?

Absolutely not. We welcome students from all fields of study — nursing, engineering, liberal arts, education, fine arts, and everything in between. Smart shopping and financial literacy are universal skills, not a major. Some of our strongest past applications have come from students with no business background whatsoever.

 Is this scholarship taxable?

Scholarship funds used for qualified education expenses (tuition, fees, required books and supplies) are generally not taxable under US federal law. However, tax treatment can vary based on individual circumstances. We recommend consulting a tax advisor or reviewing IRS Publication 970 — Tax Benefits for Education — for guidance specific to your situation.
